Speaker Spotlight: Gord McGregor, Owner, McGregor Quality Painting

At a recent BBR breakfast meeting, we heard from Gord McGregor, owner of McGregor Quality Painting. Instead of a traditional presentation, Gord opened things up to a Q&A session, sharing insights from more than 30 years in the residential painting industry.

Here are a few highlights from that conversation.

Q: Can you tell us about a recent project you enjoyed?

One project that stood out was a fireplace makeover as part of a main-floor repaint. The home had a typical late-80s look with a brass fireplace and oak mantel that felt dated.

We painted the mantel, spray-painted the fireplace, and installed a peel-and-stick wallpaper that looks like marble tile. It completely changed the look of the space and was done in about a day with minimal materials.

The homeowners loved the result — and it even led to another BBR connection when they asked for a recommendation to install a TV above the fireplace.

Q: Do clients ask for help choosing colours?

Sometimes, but I try not to get too involved in colour selection.

Colour choices can be very subjective, so if someone isn’t sure what they want, I usually recommend working with an interior designer. I’ve built relationships with a few designers over the years who are much better equipped to guide those decisions.

That said, if someone is about to paint an entire room a very bold colour and seems unsure, I might suggest testing a sample first.

Q: What’s the biggest mistake people make when painting themselves?

The biggest mistake is underestimating how long the job will take.

People think they can paint a room in an afternoon, but once they get started they realize it’s taking much longer. At that point they rush the rest of the job.

That’s when corners get cut — furniture doesn’t get moved, edges aren’t finished properly, or the second coat gets skipped. Painting takes time and patience if you want it to look good.

Q: What makes a painting job difficult?

Honestly, cluttered spaces.

When a room is packed with furniture and belongings, it becomes an obstacle course. Even if everything is piled in the middle and covered with plastic, it can leave very little space to work around the edges of the room.

Clear space makes a huge difference in how efficiently the job can be done.

Q: How should homeowners prepare before a painter arrives?

The best thing to do is remove small items and valuables from the room.

Things like decorations, picture frames, artwork, and knickknacks should be taken out before the work begins. Large furniture can usually stay and be moved as needed, but clearing smaller items makes the job much easier and reduces the risk of damage.

Q: Do you offer services beyond painting?

Yes — painting is the core of what I do, but I often help with related work while I’m already on site.

That includes drywall repairs, small drywall installations, crown moulding, trim work, and other minor handyman-type projects. If it’s something specialized, like electrical work, I’ll refer the homeowner to someone who focuses on that.

Q: After all these years, what do you still enjoy about the work?

I actually enjoy the challenging projects the most.

When something is difficult or requires a creative solution, that’s when the work becomes interesting. And seeing the finished result — especially when a space is completely transformed — is always rewarding.
