Clifton from SOSPITA Safety Management: Helping Businesses Stay Compliant, Prepared and Protected

At our latest BBR meeting, we heard from Clifton of SOSPITA Safety Management, a first aid and workplace safety educator with over 16 years of teaching experience and a passion for making sure people know what to do when it matters most.

His work goes far beyond “checking a compliance box.” He helps businesses protect their team, their clients, and their bottom line.

Clifton has trained hundreds of people across a wide range of industries — from corporate teams and financial institutions to retail, construction, industrial environments, and community organizations. That depth of experience allows him to tailor training to real workplace scenarios so teams don’t just leave with a certificate — they leave confident in what to do when it actually matters.

For many Ontario business owners, first aid requirements fall under the WSIB and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (Regulation 1101), but the details are often unclear. If your business is covered by WSIB and has employees, you’re required to have a properly stocked first aid station, located within two minutes of your team, with a trained first aider responsible for it. Clifton also recommends having at least two trained staff members so your business is always covered — whether someone is away, sick, or the person needing care.

The cost of ignoring this can be significant. Fines for non-compliance can reach up to $500,000 for corporations and $25,000 for individuals. In contrast, most businesses can become fully compliant for less than $2,000 over a two-year period. It’s a small, proactive investment that protects both your people and your business.

But first aid training isn’t just about meeting a legal requirement. It prepares your team for real-life situations — cardiac events, choking, sudden illness, slips and falls, or a medical emergency involving a client or visitor. These are the moments where proper training makes a real difference.

One of Clifton’s biggest differentiators is flexibility. Training can be delivered on-site at your workplace, in small private courses, and scheduled around your business hours. Recertification options are designed to save time and reduce cost. The result is less downtime for your team, more hands-on learning, and training that is directly relevant to your environment.

Beyond certification, SOSPITA Safety Management helps businesses set up compliant first aid kits, plan recertification timelines, and stay ahead of requirements as their team grows. It turns first aid from a one-time task into a simple, managed system that supports your business long-term.

Working with Clifton means having a clear understanding of your legal responsibilities, a cost-effective path to compliance, and a team that feels prepared and confident in an emergency. Most importantly, it creates a safer workplace for everyone who walks through your doors.

If your business has employees — or plans to — this is a conversation worth having before you need it.

The best time to think about workplace safety is before you need it. With the right training in place, first aid becomes more than a requirement — it becomes a real asset to your business.
